Performances and Exhibitions

Each year, the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts presents outstanding visual arts exhibitions and theatrical, musical, and dance productions. These performances—open to the public—serve as co-curricular opportunities for students to gain practical experience, and provide the NSU community with a local resource for educational and entertaining presentations. Shark Talent 1

The Shark Showcase is an event that Shark Talent organizes every semester. All NSU students are able to participate, allowing them to showcase their artistic abilities. Talented individuals from within Shark Talent also perform in the showcase.

9/23 - Guest Artist Exhibition: Amanda Madrigal
The Guest Artist Exhibition is a FREE event sponsored by the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts. This year we welcome New World School of the Arts alumnus Amanda Madrigal, a Miami-based fiber artist who builds figurative forms and environments using repurposed materials sourced from local thrift stores. This September, Gallery 217 will showcase a mixed media installation of Madrigal’s soft sculptures that explore interpersonal relationships, nature, architecture, and the mind-body connection.

10/2 - 10/4 - The Maltese Falcon: A Radio Show
Radio Play, Drama, Ages 13+
“In this noir classic, detective Sam Spade gets more than they bargained for when they take a case brought by a beautiful but secretive person. As soon as Wonderly shows up, trouble follows as Sam's partner is murdered and Sam is accosted by someone demanding they locate a valuable statuette. Sam, entangled in a dangerous web of crime and intrigue, soon realizes they must find the one thing they all seem to want: the bejeweled Maltese falcon.”

Mayfly

10/24 - Mayfly - A 24hr Theatre Project
Presented by Stage 2 Productions (An NSU Student Company)
Our Stage 2 students will create original works, cast, design, and stage it ALL within a 24-hour span, the performance of these original works will take place in the evening of the following day! The process begins on Friday 10/23 at 7:30 P.M. and ends at 7:30 P.M. on 10/24. (Show on 10/24 at 7:30 P.M.)

Presented by Stage 2 Productions (an NSU Student Company)
At Improv Jam 11, join us online to watch NSU students perform in this hilarious variety show filled with original improvisation skits. These students come up with all their material at home, with minimal preparation. You won’t want to miss this night of comedy and laughter!

The 13th Annual Juried Student Exhibition is a FREE event sponsored by the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts. Open to all majors and minors, students submit original works of art to be judged for prizes, all studio art and graphic design media is accepted.

FREE Event

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences supports the academic and experiential learning of undergraduate students studying the performing and visual arts. Productions and visual art exhibitions hosted by the college's Department of Performing and Visual Arts showcase the unique and diverse work of our students, faculty members, and guest artists. The university and local community are encouraged to attend, engage in, and support these events, which are held in the Performing and Visual Arts Wing of the Don Taft University Center on NSU's main campus.

Facilities

Students studying and/or participating in art, theatre, dance, musical theatre, music, and graphic design at the college gain access to:

  • Scene and costume shops
  • Dance studio
  • Orchestra, choral, and music practice rooms
  • Music keyboard and technology labs
  • Studios dedicated to painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and graphic design

The college's theatrical and musical performances are held in the 230-seat Performance Theatre and the 100-seat Black Box Theatre. Visual art exhibitions by student, faculty, and emerging artists in solo, group, and juried exhibitions are held in Gallery 217.

Auditions

Auditions are generally held twice a year, at the start of the fall and winter semesters. Auditions are open to all students, faculty, and staff of NSU.

Box Office

Tickets can be pre-purchased online, or at the box office the day of the show. To pre-purchase tickets, visit the “Performing Arts Schedule” tab, and select the show you wish to see. You will be redirected to OvationTix to complete your purchase.

Tickets are not required for entrance to visual art exhibitions held in Gallery 217. Gallery hours vary.

Parking and Directions

  • Directions to Campus
  • Once you enter NSU's north entrance on Ray Ferrero Jr. Blvd., proceed to the parking garage on your right.
  • Exit the garage and walk south.
  • Continue past the Alvin Sherman Library on the left (east).
  • The Don Taft University Center will be straight ahead (south/southeast of garage).
