The Halmos College of Arts and Sciences has two campuses that feature living classrooms with diverse academic offerings. Students will gain fresh perspectives by thinking experientially as well as experimentally.  

Master's Degrees

The Halmos College of Arts and Sciences offers three types of master’s degrees in a variety of fields. A master’s degree allows a student to receive specialized training, allowing them to advance into a fulfilling career.

Doctoral Degrees

Halmos College offers two doctoral degrees (Ph.D.). In both Ph.D. programs, students pursue an in-depth study in their field while drawing from a variety of theoretical perspectives and the knowledge of an experienced, interdisciplinary faculty.

Graduate Certificates

The graduate certificate programs are designed for professionals in the field seeking career advancement, those who aspire to enter the field, or individuals in related professions.  These programs are designed so students may pursue them without interruption of their professional work schedules. Most certificate programs include a combination of on-campus and online classes that best fit student schedules.

M.A. Composition, Rhetoric, and Digital Media

The Master of Arts in Composition, Rhetoric, and Digital Media program is built with students’ long-term success and employability in mind. Graduates with an M.A. in Composition, Rhetoric, and Digital Media from NSU will be prepared to pursue doctoral studies as well as a variety of careers in publishing and/or education.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for editors and writers will keep pace with other professions over the next several years, while demand for certain specialties, such as technical writing, will increase 10% faster than the average for all occupations.

M.S. Marine Science

What better place to advance your education in marine science than at a university with an entire campus and marina devoted to the field? Dive deep into the study of marine systems and be exposed to a wide variety of special topics, including everything from shark research to coral reef conservation.

As a graduate of the marine sciences master’s programs, you’ll be prepared for advanced roles in education, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and more.

M.S. Biological Sciences - Health Studies Concentration

The demand for better health care workers is at an all-time high. Doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and other medical professionals are highly sought after and lead rewarding and successful careers. A Master of Science in Health Studies is designed to better prepare you for entrance into highly competitive, health-related professional schools. In this 12-month (30-credit) program, you’ll be exposed to rigorous coursework to develop in-depth knowledge of science as it relates to the human body. You’ll learn about current advances in medical research and practice critical-thinking skills.

M.S. Biological Sciences - Research Concentration

The Master of Science in Biological Sciences degree with a concentration in research gives you the opportunity to pursue your research interests in a specific aspect of genomics, microbiology, evolution, ecology, parasitology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics.

As a graduate of this program, you can enter a multitude of careers in all fields of biology or continue your educational journey in a Ph.D. or professional medical program. In your research, you’ll tackle significant questions in biology and gain a superior understanding of the scientific method, applying it to your specific research goals and projects.

M.S. Conflict Analysis and Resolution

The Master of Science in Conflict Analysis and Resolution is designed to train reflective professionals in the practice, design, and evaluation of a variety of conflict resolution applications. The program focuses on pragmatic approaches to solving problems inherent in human social relations.

Students are exposed to a wide array of techniques and strategies to help people achieve nonviolent, non-litigious solutions for conflicts that arise in many personal, professional, organizational, and social environments.

M.S. National Security Affairs and International Relations

National Security Affairs is one of the fastest-growing professions, with positions open in the public sector in the federal, state, and local governments and in the private sector. This program is designed for professionals and those aspiring for careers in the field, as well as for students with a strong academic interest in security affairs and international relations.

The program is offered entirely online or in a hybrid format. Students selecting the hybrid format will take a combination of courses at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus and online. A minimum of one campus-based course is offered each semester.

M.P.S. Environmental Science

In the M.P.S. of Environmental Sciences, students will have the choice of specializing in marine biology, coastal zone management, computational molecular biology, or environmental sciences. This program is unique by providing basic applied marine and environmental science as its anchor.

This program is designed for both recent graduates and returning professionals who require additional expertise or credentials to advance in their field.

Graduate Certificate in Computational Molecular Biology

This Computational Molecular Biology Certificate intends to assist students' entry into the genomics industry and workforce. It provides a solid foundation for both genomics and computer science fields, introduces bioinformatics theory, resources, and databases, and enables a gateway to more advanced studies in computational molecular biology.

Certificate students will learn how to interpret complex genomic data, manage large caches of genetic sequences, as well as database management and a variety of connected applications. This certificate program can be completed online, and courses do not have to be taken over consecutive semesters.

Graduate Certificate In Advanced Conflict Resolution Practice

The Graduate Certificate in Advanced Conflict Resolution Practice offers students the fundamentals of applied conflict resolution and advanced training in the conflict resolution "skill-set." It is intended to meet the needs of those individuals who seek more expertise in conflict resolution and are mainly interested in becoming practitioners in the field.

This certificate may also be appropriate for professionals who have already earned a graduate degree in their professional area, but who would benefit from an academic study of applications of conflict analysis & resolution in their current profession. This program is offered in both online and on-campus formats.

Graduate Certificate In National Security Affairs And International Relations

The NSAIR certificate program is designed for professionals in the field seeking career advancement, those who aspire to enter the field, individuals in related professions, and those retired from the military and government seeking consulting and other positions. Examples of potential students include personnel in the military, federal, state and local governments, law enforcement, corporations, and academia, as well as recent college graduates.

For students with a graduate degree or pursuing a graduate degree in another field, this would be a valuable complement to their existing program. The program focuses on building critical analytical skills graduates need to succeed professionally in the field of national security affairs. 

Graduate Certificate In Peace Studies

The Graduate Certificate Program in Peace Studies offers interdisciplinary graduate studies for life-long learners who want to become familiar and skilled in the discourse of peace studies. This program offers an opportunity to gain a broad understanding of various aspects of peacebuilding and conflict resolution skills.

Areas of study include the history and theory of international and domestic conflict; the political, economic, cultural, and social roots of such conflict; the causes and conduct of warfare; violence prevention; and global institutions for the resolution of conflict.

Graduate Certificate In Qualitative Research

The Graduate Certificate in Qualitative Research consists of six three-credit-hour online courses (18 credit hours) designed to prepare academics, professional research consultants, and graduate students to understand a variety of qualitative research approaches and to conduct qualitative research studies.

Our certificate students will gain insight into the philosophical and theoretical foundations of qualitative research; distinguish and critique qualitative research approaches and products; and apply best practices in qualitative research to design, propose, conduct, and compose qualitative research of their own.

Ph.D. In Conflict Analysis And Resolution

The mission of the Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution program is to advance the study and practice of conflict analysis and resolution by mentoring and developing practitioners trained in theory, practice, research, teaching, and informed leadership in the field.

The degree focuses on improving skills for reflective practice, understanding, and mastering qualitative and quantitative research knowledge and analysis, developing professional leadership skills, and producing publications of quality and substance.

Ph.D. In Oceanography / Marine Biology

The Oceanography / Marine Biology doctoral student will work directly with a major professor. This research faculty member will mentor you and aid in developing your academic program of study and your research.

This degree focuses on the ability to conduct advanced, original, and independent research that adds to the body of oceanographic knowledge in one or more of the sub-discipline areas.
