Professional Interests
Shanti Bruce, Ph.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts. She earned the Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award and was the 2011 NSU Convocation speaker. Her books ESL Writers: A Guide for Writing Center Tutors (Heinemann, now in a 2nd edition) and Creative Approaches to Writing Center Work (Hampton Press) were each honored with the International Writing Centers Association’s Outstanding Scholarship Award for Best Book. She also published What Every Multilingual Student Should Know About Writing for College (Pearson) and Tutoring Second Language Writers from Utah State University Press. She co-edited a special issue of Academic Exchange Quarterly and recently published a book chapter in Transnational Writing Program Administration.
She has given over 60 peer-reviewed and invited conference presentations and workshops, including being the Keynote Speaker at a Pacific Northwest Writing Centers Association Conference, Featured Speaker at a European Writing Centers Association Conference in Germany, and Plenary Speaker at a Midwest Writing Centers Association Conference.
Dr. Bruce led two IWCA Summer Institutes for Writing Center Directors and Professionals, co-chaired two Southeastern Writing Center Association Conferences, and co-chaired a National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing. She served on the Executive Board of the SWCA for seven years, won the SWCA Achievement Award, and was on the Advisory Board of Southern Discourse in the Center: A Journal of Multiliteracy and Innovation. She is a reviewer for Across the Disciplines: A Journal of Language, Learning, and Academic Writing; Language Education; WLN: A Journal of Writing Center Scholarship; and Writing Center Journal.
She is co-PI of the study titled "The Language Repertoires of First-Year Writers: A Cross-Institutional Study of Multilingual Writers." Funded by a Conference on College Composition and Communication Research Initiative Grant, the research team also includes Rebecca Lorimer Leonard, Ph.D., UMass-Amherst, and Deirdre Vinyard, Ph.D., Emily Carr University of Art and Design-Vancouver.
