HCAS Graduate Assistantship for Doctoral Students

Award Amount: Stipend up to a maximum of $15,600 per year, paid bi-weekly

  • One an academic year only. Fall to summer terms, depending on available funds
  • Positions are for a maximum of 20 hours per week in an on-campus program
  • The faculty committees review continuation of the assistantship after each trimester based on the student academic and GA performance
  • Maintain a full-time course load

  • Good academic standing

Teaching Assistant - Biological Sciences

Under the supervision and in the direction of the Faculty Mentor, the graduate teaching assistant performs teaching activities at the university that are relevant to an advanced degree and advances expertise through education and professional training and experience.  Duties as specified and may include teaching or teaching-related duties, class/ lab preparation, grading of labs, tests and homework, recording of grades, and meeting with students.

Award Amount: 18 weeks of employment (one week before and one week after the semester start and end dates), and up to $5000 total paid out in equal installments over 8 pay periods (20 hours per week) and up to a $5,000 scholarship (or total price of registered credits enrolled in for the semester working) to be applied toward tuition.

Requirements:

  • Must be an NSU student pursuing a graduate or terminal degree. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited university must already be completed.
  • Must be extremely organized and detail-oriented.
  • Must have the wise judgment to make good decisions and must represent the instructor and college with integrity.
  • Prefer someone with prior experience in relevant courses especially including Introductory Biology, experience with applied microbiology, and/or medical terminology courses are also beneficial. Class assignments will be made mostly to support these courses. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher; Email Program; Internet, SharkLearn, and basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

Graduate Lab Assistant

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

To prepare chemical and biological materials and solutions for the undergraduate labs, to organize the equipment and materials, and to be present for the duration of a lab session to assist students and instructors as needed. Work to be done under the supervision of CNSO faculty and Lab Operations staff.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure all chemicals, equipment, and materials are in order prior to the beginning of lab
  • Know the lab and experimental procedures before coming to lab and assist faculty/students during lab
  • Prior to leaving, ensure the lab is cleaned, organized, and in proper condition by having the lab checked by Lab Ops
  • Handle, contain, label, and dispose of hazardous materials and waste properly
  • Abide by all safety regulations and wear required personal protective equipment while in lab
  • Maintain communication with faculty in case modifications to labs are needed
  • Communicate issues with lab support staff and fellow LAs to ensure they are addressed
    • All General Chemistry LAs must send a report to the listserve immediately after lab
  • Report low/empty stock solutions and damage to equipment and instruments to lab support staff ASAP
  • Maintain equipment quality and cleanliness (i.e.. empty and rinse autoclave after use)
  • Notify Lab Ops when in a lab outside of standard hours and ALWAYS be checked out afterward by Lab Ops
  • Additional tasks related to undergraduate labs as assigned.

Research Assistants Position

Award Amount: These positions typically come with a 50% - 80% tuition waiver, along with an hourly wage for up to 37.5 hours a week (but this may vary).

Otherwise, you can also reach out to faculty members individually to ask whether they either have positions open or if they plan to have any positions open in the future.

Graduate Student Lecture Assistant

The primary purpose of a graduate lecture assistant is to assist the faculty member with classroom and office support for larger course sections. The instructor will work with the Graduate Student Lecture Assistant to support lecture instruction in large class sections. Duties will include:

  • Proctoring quizzes and tests 
  • Grading 
  • Study sessions for students 
  • Summary: The graduate student position will provide up to 5 hours of work per week for each lecture section (Ex. A single student worker could be assigned up to 4 lecture courses; a single person’s work in this position is not to exceed 20 hours of work per week).

Award Amount: 16 weeks of employment, $12/hour for a maximum of 20 hours/week

Writing Center Graduate Assistant

Prospective and current students in the Master of Arts in Composition, Rhetoric, and Digital Media (CRDM) program are welcome to apply to become a graduate assistant working in the Writing and Communication Center (WCC).
